The plan was simple. Stay in a hotel in the city, have some dinner in a park, and then head out to the free outdoor stuff.
The first part of the plan went fine (thanks to my parents making that possible - what a great Christmas gift). We hung out in the rooftop spa with a view over the city until we got hungry. This lead to part two of our plan.
While I jazzed myself up, Martijn organised the take-away Indian food from our long-ago favourite restaurant. We met up again in the park across the road from the hotel. I had the wine, Martijn had the food. Not much could go wrong.
Then the thunderstorm came. We had to run and quickly eat our dinner under a tree (not what you are supposed to do when there is lightning, I know). Then a security dude came and asked us to "eat quickly and leave the park" because we were sitting next to one of the firework spots. Funny how I had missed the big, fenced off area with all the explosives 10 meters from us.
So, part three of our 3-pronged NYE attack on Melbourne didnt quite happen. It was too wet (it rained the entire night). Instead, in the breaks of the re-run of one of the Lord of the Rings films, we talked about what we could do. At midnight we ran outside and watched the fireworks that were going off just across the road, then we ran back inside, caught the end of the movie, and called it a night!
We had a great time.
We had a great time.
